The American Legion was formed in March of 1919, in Paris France. Theodore Roosevelt,Jr. was one of the original founders. Galesburg Post 285 was established in 1920 and had three commanders that year, R.E. Johnston, B.H. Danforth, and T.J. Francis. They met at 151 East Main Street and later they held their meeting at the Broadview Hotel in the legion club room. A post was built in 1940 at 571 East North St. and the current post was built at the same location in 1995. The post was named after Lt. Ralph Matthews Noble whom was born March 28th, 1889 in Harlan Iowa and entered the service May 15,1917 at Galesburg, Illinois. He served overseas in December 26th, 1917 and was shot down in aerial combat May 10th, 1918 and Died May 14th. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with palm and is buried in Somme American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
Post 285 makes donations to local organizations. We have a combined color guard from American Legion Post 285 and our brothers across town at VFW Post 2257 that performs services for our deceased veterans at the family’s request through their funeral director.
We currently have almost 300 members and are looking for more. We are in search of Gulf War era, Iraq, and Afghanistan Veterans. Do you know any? Come and join one of the oldest veterans’ organizations. The post meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm. See our Facebook Page
