Events

The battle of Iwo Jima was marked by some of the fiercest fighting of World War II. 21,000 Japanese were dispersed through the island in heavy concrete bunkers. They defended their positions tenaciously and of these only 216 were taken prisoner. Iwo Jima was the first of the Japanese home islands to be attacked thus the ferocity of the battle.
